World Homeless Day 2022 Photovoice Exhibition
World Homeless Day is observed annually on the 10th of October every year. The purpose of the day is to draw attention to people who experience homelessness and provide opportunities for the community to get involved in responding to homelessness, while taking advantage of the stage an ‘international day’ provides. To recognise World Homeless Day 2022, Housing First Ōtautahi put together a Photovoice Exhibition featuring photos taken by people experiencing homelessness, sharing their own stories and reality of life living on the streets.
The Photovoice process involved a group of individuals who have experienced homelessness taking a range of photos of things that hold significance to them, reflecting their lives, interests and surroundings in visual form. Video stories accompany the photos to share the meanings behind the images.
Too often people associate harmful stereotypes with a person sleeping on the street, without understanding the circumstances that have led to them being there. With this exhibition, Housing First Ōtautahi sought to bridge the gap of understanding between the public and people sleeping rough on the streets.
If you missed out on viewing the exhibition in-person, you can check it out online! All the exhibition content is available to view on our website.
